Atsushi, our President, has more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and has been an integral member of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Inc. (MTPA) since its inception in 2009.
Prior to his current role, he was Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Operations at Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Holdings America, Inc. From 2012 to 2014, Atsushi served as Group Manager for US/EU Operations of the International Department for Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation. He also worked at MTPA as Director of Corporate Strategy and Marketing from 2008 to 2012. Prior to that time, Atsushi was a Manager at Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation.
Atsushi holds a Bachelor of Agriculture from Hiroshima University, and a Master of Science in Management of Technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
As our Vice President of Medical Affairs, Gustavo A. Suarez Zambrano, M.D. is the most senior medical authority for the company and oversees all Medical Affairs activities in North America. He has almost 20 years of combined experience in clinical neurology and pharmaceutical medical affairs. After practicing as a general neurologist for more than 10 years, he has held various medical positions within the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
In his previous role, Dr. Suarez Zambrano was Lead Medical Director, U.S. Clinical Development and Medical Affairs, at Novartis, focusing on multiple sclerosis (MS). He also has held senior medical positions at four additional biotech and pharmaceutical companies. In these roles, he was responsible for overseeing multiple phase two, three and four studies in the U.S. and globally and supported product launches for treatments addressing neurological conditions including MS, spasticity and movement disorders.
Prior to Dr. Suarez Zambrano’s experience in corporate medical affairs positions, he completed his two-year post-doctorate research fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston focusing on MS and demyelinating diseases. He also spent seven years practicing as a general neurologist in Bogota, Colombia, where he oversaw the Neurology Clinic for the Red Cross and led his own private practice. He also was the lead author and co-author for several peer reviewed publications in the U.S. covering MS, cerebral palsy, stroke and spasticity.
Dr. Suarez Zambrano is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and holds a Doctorate degree, specializing in Neurology.
As our Vice President of Market Access, Kevin brings more than 30 years of commercial experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, having served in a wide range of roles ranging from field sales to executive leadership.
Most recently, Kevin served as the Vice President of Market Access at Bioventus, where he was responsible for leading payer, trade, marketing, contracting, work compensation, and government teams. Prior to that, Kevin spent 6 years at Endo Pharmaceuticals, culminating in the role of Senior Director of Managed Markets. Earlier in his career, Kevin held roles in managed markets and sales at a number of pharmaceutical companies.
Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science in Forest Biology and Ichthyology from the State University of New York.
Joseph is our Vice President of Sales and Marketing. His professional experience includes more than 20 years in commercial operations in a range of therapeutic areas that include rare diseases, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, hematology and respiratory disease.
Before joining Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Joseph held various leadership roles at Bayer Healthcare for 10 years across sales, strategy, marketing, market access and business operations both in the U.S. and globally. There, he most recently served as Vice President and Head of Cardiopulmonary Marketing. In addition, Joseph has been responsible for several successful product launches in orphan diseases. His career in the pharmaceutical industry began with roles in sales and marketing at Sepracor and GlaxoSmithKline.
Joseph has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from William Paterson University.
With two decades of experience in life sciences, Dr. Sam Shum is MTPA’s Vice President of Operations & Strategy, overseeing the company’s operational functions of Finance, Supply Chain, Quality Assurance Public Affairs, Patient Engagement, Compliance Operations and Business Process and Strategy.
Before joining MTPA, Dr. Shum was Treasurer of Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he provided executive oversight for the hospital’s pharmacies, revenue cycle, contracting, 340B operations, procurement, accounting operations and treasury management. He also served as the liaison between the hospital system and New York State Department of Health. Previously, Dr. Shum held various operational, financial and engineering positions in diverse industries including life sciences, chemical, financial, consumer goods, and information systems.
Dr. Shum holds a Doctor of Business Administration in Finance from Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from New York University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University. His professional accreditations include Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, Certified Financial Manager and Certified Treasury Professional.
